Character Name: Faris NyanNyan (real name: Akiha Rumiho)
Canon Name: Steins;Gate (specifically the anime, but will include supporting info from the VN).
Here's a nice summary.
Canon Point: I'll be taking Faris from the beta timeline, divergence 1.048596 (aka the canon timeline, "Stein's Gate.") This would be right after the end of the anime.
Personality: On first glance, Faris looks every bit like the most stereotypical anime girl you could think of - the bright pink drill pigtails, the cat ears perched nonsensically on top of her head, the ever-present maid costume, and the cutesy verbal tic. Of course, considering that, in the world of Steins;Gate, she's the one who invented that stereotype and proceeded to spread it throughout Akihabara, that perspective might change a little. Faris the cat-eared maid, MayQueen Nyan Nyan, and the mecca of moe that is Akihabara are all the result of a very clever and very imaginative young woman - one who desperately needed to escape from her reality.
Generally, Faris matches her appearance quite well. High-energy and enthusiastic, she's the star maid of her cafe, her dedication and bouncy adorableness making her irresistably charming to her patrons. It's quite obvious that she readily accepts just about anybody, regardless of appearance or even the typical assumptions you might make of someone coming into a maid cafe - she never judges by first impression, and is highly tolerant and friendly to even the chubby, stalker-level fanboy nerd Daru. One thing Faris prides herself on his her ability to "see into peoples' hearts" -- she's an extremely good judge of character. Thus, while Daru might look like a gross otaku, she still befriended him - he's a good person deep down. The same thing goes for Okabe, who also comes off as a rather shady character upon first impression (to say the least.) She'll excitedly play along with even the most ridiculous of stories. She has an aura of cheer and friendliness that's hard to ignore, and it's difficult to earn her dislike without actively provoking her. Faris describes herself as an entertainer and lives to make others happy.
That said, she's quite fond of teasing and play-arguing with her friends, as well. She's terribly flirty and somewhat lacking in understanding when it comes to the concept of personal space, especially towards boys; the better she knows you, the less likely she'll resist the impulse to snuggle up close or bite your ear or what have you. This is undoubtedly another one of her appealing factors as a maid. Even so, she doesn't take the concept of love lightly in the least, if her crush on Okabe (or as she calls him shyly later, her prince) is anything to go by, and seems quite devoted to her friends... usually. She does have a rather sizeable ego, and tends to act in the ways that benefit her most - while she would never do anything really hurtful, she's not above a little manipulation to get things to turn out the best for her, such as tricking Okabe into thinking she knows something about the IBN 5100 in order to use his time machine.
This behavior mostly originates from her competitive personality. She loves to win, and if there's a chance to win, Faris will most certainly grab it. Unlike the (perhaps vapid-seeming) catgirl she appears to be, she's actually incredibly clever; not necessarily in terms of school smarts, but in terms of strategy, logical thinking, and social situations. Since a young age, Faris has been directly involved in big city politics in Akihabara, and thus, she's learned to think on her feet and beat out others with words alone; she's excellent in the art of persuasion and understanding the mood of an argument or conversation, as evidenced both in her interactions with her friends and in the fact that Akihabara's business and atmosphere has been sculpted largely according to her whims. The whims of a teenage girl! This fierce competitiveness and need for victory bleeds into her hobby, the board game Rai-Net, at which she is so talented at that she can play in national tournaments - and win. The game revolves largely around reading your opponent, and when it comes to that, Faris simply can't be beaten.
But "Faris-tan is Faris-tan nya." A persona. The real Faris - Akiha Rumiho - is, in actuality, a girl with a lot of money, a lot of influence, and a lot of imagination... and that's it. Alone and burdened by a feeling of guilt for her father's death, it's implied that Rumiho embraced the idea of fandom, moe, and "Faris Nyan Nyan" in order to escape from this lonely reality. If she filled the world with happiness and cuteness, and brought smiles to everyone around her, then she couldn't possibly be sad. A dream that any lonely, big-hearted child might have; the difference is that Rumiho had the power to make it happen and did. As it is now, Faris has almost entirely eclipsed Rumiho; her real identity is kept secret to most, and she prefers the name Faris in all but the most serious and intimate of situations. Only those closest to her get the chance to speak with Rumiho as her true self, and only if something truly serious comes up.
It's not that she's lost touch with reality; indeed, Rumiho is very smart and doesn't deny anything about herself or her situation, and when she gains the opportunity to throw the fantasy away and bring back her father, she ends up taking it. It's merely that, 90% of the time, Faris is who she'd rather be; the simple, charming and lovely cat-eared maid, bringing relaxation and joy to her customers, rather than Rumiho, the rich orphan girl neck-deep in city politics an unremedied guilt. Rather than rejecting her reality for a fantasy, she melded them together into one being. The strong, serious and successful city of Akihabara is simultaneously mecca of moe that she loves; just the same, the proud and clever land baron's daughter Rumiho is simultaneously the fantastic and fabulous cat-eared maid Faris, powered by an infinite imagination.
Abilities: None! Other than being cute and sassy.
